The leaders of the Charlotte County Volunteer Fire and EMS Service are not holding back in describing how old and outdated their communications system is. at the recent meeting at Phenix, the chiefs made it quite clear that the entire system must be scrapped and replaced. The department can’t even get new parts for broken radios, at this point, and they’re frustrated that it seems like their needs have been placed on the back burner year after year. Phenix Fire Chief Walt Bailey even told the Record the reality that residents’ safety is at risk, along with the men and women who work to deal with emergencies – because of the lackluster communications system. One option being considered is to lease new equipment instead of purhasing it. The county supervisors are scheduled to meet next week to discuss the communication problems.
